The leech is truly a miracle of nature — used mainly in the Middle Ages, and because it actually works, it has survived to this day. It must be a medicinal leech, recognizable by the colored stripes on its back — not the ordinary ones you find in a stream.
When I was around 20, I came into contact with leeches for the first time. I had health problems and, like most people, I was looking for all possible ways to heal. One of them was leech therapy. At that time, I struggled a lot with fatigue, and I can honestly say that after the therapy, I didn’t know what tiredness was anymore. It gave me an energy boost like three Red Bulls.
The first time I tried this therapy was with a therapist somewhere in Galanta. She taught me how to use them, and I left with my own leeches to continue at home. Nowadays, I get them from a wonderful therapist, Henrieta Galátová, in the Anima Center in Bratislava. She gets them from a medicinal leech farm in Martin.
I once applied leeches for a friend who had varicose veins — they were about 2 cm raised above the skin. I witnessed a miracle with my own eyes. After the first session, the veins visibly shrank, and after the second or third, they were almost gone. Her legs stopped hurting, and even after four years, the problem never came back.
How does the medicinal leech heal?
Many people think it heals by sucking blood — but that’s not true. The leech heals by releasing healing substances into the bloodstream as it bites through the skin. These include histamine, hirudin, and other biologically beneficial compounds. This process lasts about 7 minutes, and only afterward does it begin to take blood — which it needs to survive.
People who are allergic to bee stings should not undergo this therapy — but an experienced therapist will always explain everything in detail. I’m simply sharing my personal experience here.
Medicinal leeches have many uses
They are excellent for:
- Fatigue and varicose veins
- Headaches and migraines
- Cardiovascular problems
- High or low blood pressure
- Chronic inflammation (joints, tendons, nerves)
- Poorly healing wounds (such as leg ulcers)
- Hemorrhoids
- And many other health issues
Leech therapy is used all over the world — and in Germany, it’s even covered by health insurance.
So, if you’re not squeamish, aren’t afraid of blood, and have no allergies to histamine or insect bites — and if you’re open to it — give it a try. You might just see for yourself how effective it can be.PS: nebolí to.
About the Author of the Article
I am the author of the book How to Heal? My Journey of Healing from Depression Without Medication. And Not Only from That. It was accompanied by nonstop migraines, anxiety, panic attacks, and suicidal thoughts. The first time, I completely healed in 8 months, and about 10 years later, in 1 year and 3 months. It was a path of changes I had to make if I truly wanted to be healthy. I succeeded.
